Remote learning model
While we recognize that remote learning is the environment that provides the lowest level of risk for the transmission of COVID-19, it does not replicate the inherent value of in-person teaching and learning. The district understands that this model presents real challenges for families balancing work responsibilities with supporting their children in a remote learning environment. Because the health and safety of students and staff are the priority, If COVID cases were to increase in our area, the district will be prepared to move all students to this mode of learning, as we did last spring.
The entire district will utilize Google Classroom so that families will interface with a single Learning Management System.
Elementary students will have a morning meeting at the beginning of the school day, followed by multiple learning blocks addressing all subjects ( reading, writing, math, science or social studies) throughout the week. Specials (art, music, P.E.) will take place remotely twice a week. In each learning block there would be a blend of live whole-class instruction, small group activities, and independent work including asynchronous learning opportunities. Each learning block would be slightly shorter than those in school to accommodate screen breaks. The overall school day would be slightly shorter as well so that teachers have some me to plan together at the end of the day.
Both our July and August surveys made clear that there will be students in our district who will need to learn in a fully remote environment, with no potential of in-person instruction instruction. Respondents have shared that they are concerned about health risks of children or family members who may fall into high-risk categories. We have heard from other families that have indicated that their children have been thriving in a remote environment. The district is pleased to provide a fully-remote option for all families who desire one.
Elementary: Academy of Personalized Learning (APL)
At the elementary level, students who choose the Academy of Personalized Learning (APL) will be included in a hybrid cohort (A or B) and will be assigned to both a building-based classroom and either a K-2 or 3-5 district elementary teacher who will provide coaching and academic support. Each student will be provided with access to the appropriate grade level Edgenuity on-line core academic program and their coach will be able to monitor each individual student’s progress and performance with usage statistics, grading and feedback tools, curriculum maps, and communication tools.
Students will maintain social connections with their home school. Wednesday morning meetings, held at all grade levels, will include students in APL. In addition, virtual small group social connections will be offered (lunch or snack bunches, read alouds or shared book readings, and interest-based student social groups).
All students will be welcome to participate in specialist classes (art, music, PE) on Wednesdays with their hybrid peers. Any special activities, virtual assemblies or field trips, or school-wide activities will be available to APL students. APL students will also be able to access reading and math online reinforcement/practice resources that are identical to their hybrid counterparts.
Our district is committed to ensuring all learners stay connected to their schools and classmates during the pandemic. To this end, students who are participating in the HW Virtual Academy will have opportunities to integrate into some instructional components of the hybrid remote learning model.
At the elementary level students who choose the HW Virtual Academy option will be included in a hybrid cohort. In addition, a district elementary teacher will be assigned to provide academic support to these students. Students will be assigned to grade-level classrooms in elementary schools for social connections. Wednesday morning meetings will include students in the Virtual Academy. Students in grades 6-12 will be in a 1:1 digital device model. The H-W High School’s iPad 1:1 program will be entering its sixth year and will continue this fall.
Miles River Middle School students will be issued a district device that they will be using in the classroom and they will be able to take home for remote asynchronous or synchronous learning.
For those families interested in going out and purchasing their student a personal learning device, the district has successfully deployed these devices in these categories.
In the remote model we will continue tracking participation and attendance of students and staff. All students, whether remote or in-person, will check in to a homeroom, Crew, or morning meeting at the start of the school day. Attendance will be taken during that time. Teacher attendance will be taken based on their log-in to the district’s SIS, Aspen. Remote work will be a continuation of our standards-based grade level or course-specific curriculum. Teachers will continue to issue formal grades to students in the remote model. All teachers will have identified remote office hours for students and parents to connect with them when needed.
